Day 3: Intuitive Eating

Intuitive Eating. You may have heard of it, you may be an expert on it, or you may be like what the heck is that? Well, you’re in the right place!

Here are the 10 main principles:

  1. Reject the Diet Mentality: f**k diet culture.

  2. Honor Your Hunger: eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full.

  3. Make Peace with Food: give yourself unconditional permission to eat

  4. Challenge the Food Police: there are no “good” and “bad” foods

  5. Discover the Satisfaction Factor: appreciate the food experience

  6. Feel Your Fullness: listen to your body’s signals

  7. Cope with Your Emotions with Kindness: don’t deal with your emotions with food

  8. Respect Your Body: all bodies are good bodies

  9. Movement–Feel the Difference: focus on how you feel when you exercise, rather than the calories burned

  10. Honor Your Health–Gentle Nutrition: make food choices that are nutritious, but also enjoyable

Other tools to eat mindfully:

  • Chew thoroughly

  • Put down your fork in between bites

  • Minimize distractions (phone, TV, work, etc.)

  • Notice the food with all five senses

This framework was originally introduced by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, who co-wrote Intuitive Eating. This is not a paid promotion or anything encouraged by someone else. Friend to friend: consider this book as an investment for yourself. It will change the way you think about food for (hopefully) the rest of your life.
